Religious Affiliation Predicts Belief in Climate Change

[bpsdb] One of the more fascinating feeds I've found since plunging deeper into Twitters incessant deluge of information and increasing my own presence there, is that of the Pew Research Center. So far this month alone they've published several studies on beliefs that are worth reporting, but for now I'll just deal with one, on Religion and Climate Change

Science Returns to the White House

Much has and will be said about Obama's inauguration speech, but for now I just want to look at it from the perspective of science. For eight years the United States has been driven by a president who valued faith above evidence, who was "suspicious" of intellectuals and intelligence, who suppressed or simply ignored scientific advice that did not fit in with his own simple ideology. As I argued in the article I wrote for the Why Science project recently, science needs to be an integral part of politics. It seems Obama feels the same way I do.

Meet Obama's Chief Science Advisor

Dr. John Holdren has been named as President-Elect Barack Obama's chief science advisor, in a move that will reassure scientists and anyone who gives a crap about the environment. A former head of the AAAS, he is known for speaking out rationally and calmly about climate change, and his appointment suggests that the issue is going to be taken extremely seriously by the Obama administration.

A Letter to America: Obama vs. Blair

Ames at one of my favourite must-read blogs, "Submitted to A Candid World", recently wrote an article comparing the rise of Tony Blair and New Labour before his election in 1997, with the victory of Obama and what he called the "New Democrats" in 2008. Indeed, the similarities are uncanny. Both came to power after deeply unpopular opposition governments, both achieves stunning victories, both campaigned the simply but effective mantra "time for a change". But not long after Tony Blair took power things began to unravel, and it turned out that under the glossy sheen and behind the 100 watt smile, things were not what they seemed. What had seemed like the greatest victory for the left in a generation began to turn sour. Could the same happen with Obama?

Presidential Candidates on Vaccines - I'd vote McCain...!

Gnnnnaaaaaaaarrrrrrgggghhhh!!! This was the reaction of intelligent people on hearing war-hero and quack (hey, I'm balanced) John McCain's latest comments on the non-existant link between autism and vaccines. Clinton and Obama had something to say about it too, so lets analyse the various comments, and I'll tell you why I think McCain's position could be a Good ThingTM for scientists (well, with a long stretch of the imagination).
