Jenny McCarthy Jokes and Logical Fallacies

You might wonder what relevance jokes about an erstwhile Playboy centrefold might have to a science blog, but bear with me – all will soon become clear. Many readers of science blogs such as Layscience will be familiar with the singularity that is Jenny McCarthy, autism activist and antivaccine campaigner. Jenny’s point of view regarding science in general and vaccines in particular is that her own experiences trump those of orthodox science, and that her opinions, backed up with her diploma in logic from the University of Google, matter far more than the views of others with specific clinical and research experience and established authority in the field.

Four Dead in South Africa Over Measles Vaccine Fears

South Africa is in the grip of a Measles epidemic that has affected over 2,000 people and killed four, with the majority of cases occurring in the Guateng region.

But an unusual feature of this outbreak is that it isn't necessarily poorer families being effected. The South African Department of Health have noted an unusual pattern to the cases.

While everyone is on the subject of HPV…

It is distasteful to see a number of anti-vax headlines (which have subsequently been taken down) reporting the tragic death of a 15 year-old girl after she had received the cervical cancer jab. Of course we learnt soon after that Natalie Morton had a malignant chest tumour but that was after the vaccination programme had taken a hit.

None of this furore really leads to a conducive atmosphere in which we can talk about possibly extending the vaccination to boys, but I’ll give it a go.

Halvorsen on the Today Programme

Having been given space by the Daily Mail to write a column on vaccination two days ago, Dr Richard Halvorsen has today been given air-time by Radio 4. The programme is available here on iPlayer and an unverified transcript is available here.

Dr Richard Halvorsen On Vaccines

The Daily Mail has followed yesterday's article (about the death of a young girl following vaccination against HPV) with one today from Dr Richard Halvorsen. Halvorsen's article is headlined "Dr Richard Halvorsen: I'm not opposed to jabs but there are serious worries."

MMR Vaccinations Down, Measles Up

The tediously predictable has happened. The statistics are in for (most of) 2008, and cases of Measles have risen to the sorts of levels we've not seen for years - bringing us ever closer to a new major epidemic. 1,217 cases of measles were recorded from January to November 2008 - November alone saw more cases than the whole of 1996 (115 vs 113).

I Volunteered for Jock Doubleday's Bogus Vaccine Challenge

[bpsdb] Last weekend, on January 3rd to be precise, I received an e-mail from one Jock Doubleday, who describes himself as "Director" of Spontaneous Creation Publishing, which is apparently an American non-proft organization dedicated to selling documents describing, well, mostly quackery. The e-mail referred to a challenge. I like a good challenge, so I thought I'd reply.

His email was as follows:

An Open Letter to the Science Museum Over Their MMR/JABS Blunder

[BPSDB] Just when you thought that after 10 tedious years the MMR Hoax was finally dying a death, no less an authority than the Science Museum have managed to screw things up again. As reported over on Thinking is Dangerous, the Museum's staff have taken it upon themselves to recommend anti-vaccine campaigners JABS as an appropriate source of advice for concerned parents. If you haven't heard of JABS before and don't know why this is such a big deal, check out this Guardian piece on them.

So in the best British tradition I've written them a stern letter, which you can see below. First, here's a list of other bloggers writing about this. If you're a blogger and you've written a piece on this or a letter of complaint, please send me the link and I'll post it here. I also urge people to write to the Science Museum about this - you can e-mail them at feedback@nmsi.ac.uk.

BBC Policy and the JABS Nutters

BPSDBThe BBC has issued many dozens of reports about the faked MMR-Autism link over the last several years, and one of the things that myself and other bloggers have noticed is that they keep providing external links from articles to a group of nutters who call themselves JABS. "JDC325" has made numerous requests to the BBC trying to find out why this is, but has gotten nowhere. So I thought I'd have a go.

Fan Mail of the Week

Continuing my policy of publishing the more rabid "fan" mail I get, here's a little gem I got in my inbox this morning from "cbrown6". While most of my critics get the hump after reading just one article, this dedicated reviewer has detailed startling new evidence that rips apart the supposed "evidence" behind several of my articles here.
