What ever happened to mercury?

A brief note on nothing. A couple of decades ago there was a scare relating to the mercury in silver fillings as a cause of Multiple Sclerosis. That slowly expanded to any neurological disease.

I haven't heard much of the story lately. That may be because all of the money that can be made by removing silver alloy restorations has been made. And the results?

There has been no decrease in the incidence of multiple sclerosis in the United States. Over two decades should be enough time for the affects of new, plastic composite restorations to be seen. There is no change.

To quote from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in the US:

"There is no evidence that heavy metal exposure causes M.S."

"The most promising candidate appears to be the Epstein-Barr virus."

"M.S. is 2-3 times more common in women than men."
My point is that both men and women have fillings.

No serious news. I only wanted to show that wrong, unscientific health theories do not improve with age. Today's uproar is tomorrow's whimper. Where did all the money spent removing perfectly good (if dark) fillings go?

No one is giving it back that I can see.

Not only is the connection between "silver" (really amalgam) fillings and any kind of poisoning/disease highly dubious (and has been for some time), the "funny" thing about removing these fillings to avoid any more mercury is that removing it will maximize your exposure to it through tiny bits and pieces you swallow during the removal procedure.
