Dave Gorman Supports 10:23 on Channel 5

Some of you may know that I'm the press officer for the 10:23 Campaign. It's been a truly crazy week, but moments like this have been incredibly rewarding. 10:23 was featured on The Wright Stuff this morning, and Dave Gorman gave an excellent, clear, and razor-sharp explanation of why we're doing this.

Not sure that he was *specifically* talking about the 1023 campaign (saw it this morning, can't remember specifics, but can't get the vid to load to check) rather he was just generally (independently) critical of homeopathy being sold as real medicine.

Of course the news segment was about the campaign and his comments were a response to that. If I can get the video to work and I'm wrong I'll come back and delete this before anyone notices :D

Notice how the comic was happy to say how it was in the mind but it still worked.
This is a deliberate use of suggestion combined with a cosy feeling of being understood by the homeopathic doctor...and its very effective.
But then so is hypnosis.
You are feeling sleepy.

here we go again! Don't knock it til you've tried it! I am all for these guys taking remedies to see if they work but they need to do it the correct way. Homeopathy is not like other medicine as taking one tablet or 100 at once will give the same effect.it's not like knocking back 100 asprin!! That's why people take homeopathic remedies instead of pharma meds - duh!! However taking one tablet every hour over a few days will produce "symptoms" - homeopaths call this a proving and this is how homeopathy works. If you are ill take a remedy that matches your symptoms and your own body will react to the remedy and in so doing your symptoms will ease. I challenge this group of sceptics to take a remedy constantly over a few days and see if they notice. Don't worry any symptoms will go after stopping taking the remedies - I mean them no harm. There are many studies that show Homeopathy works - but Pharmacutical companies don't find them profitable it seems!

WTF? The homeopathic pill industry is worth millions: it is exceedingly profitable. Why on earth with someone with no respect for science or evidence whatsoever be hanging around a science blog other than to troll? Come back when you've learned to think for yourself.

As for the video; the guy that wasn't Dave Gorman made me want to scream, he clearly doesn't actually understand what homeopathy even is. What was that tosh about "you think Boots should sell marijuana"? Have you ever heard such a ridiculous straw man?! And maybe arnica cream does work - but the cream contains arnica! It isn't homeopathic.

"Pharmacutical companies don't find them profitable it seems!"

Do you mean pharmaceutical companies like, er, Boots? You know, the company outside whose shops the protests are going to take place?

Listening to the intro to the piece, by Wright himself, any layperson could be forgiven for thinking that homeopathy worked on the same basic principle as a vaccine! It was a totally innaccurate and misleading idescription of homeopathy, and does nothing to clarify public misapprehensions.

As for the comment from one of the posters above, that "taking 1 pill or 100 the effect is the same" serves to illustrate just how nonsensical the premise of homeopathy actually is! It reaffirms that there is no active ingredient in any homeopathic remedy, and that any perceived beneficial effect felt by the "patient" is merely placebo.

My feeling is that, for many of the general public, homeopathy is thought of as an equivalent treatment to herbal medicine, both of which allegedly offer a healthier, more natural approach to treatment than those horrible synthetic pills offered by Big Pharma, stuffed as they are with toxins and giving only nasty side effects.

I wish journalists and commentators would be more assiduous in making the distinction between herbal and homeopathic.

The new mantra seems to be "choice". Choice is great, so long as it is a choice between 2 roughly equal alternatives. This is something Homeopathy simply cannot do. This is the mantra by which Boots abide.

But Boots also wish to be seen as the trusted scientific advisor on the high street to the public, and how can they do that when the knowingly offer remedies without any active ingredient? Indeed, their Chief Compliance Officer has appeared before a HoC select committee and admitted that there is no evidence of efficacy for any homeopathic remedy above placebo.

Homeopathy is a philosophy that has outlived its shelf life - by around 200 years or so, and it demeans Boots and demeans our society to continue to offer such bogus treatments.

That's exactly it. It has happened to me more than once, that I asked users of homeopathic "medicine" to explain to my why they use it. The answers, more often than not, are a) because it has less side effects and b) because it's "natural". Then, if I try to explain the difference between herbal medicine (that does, in fact, have a basis in what I like to call "a couple of thousand years of reality") and homeopathy, these people are mostly astounded. I had at least two people (heavily on the "alternative" side, vegetarians, eating only organic foods, members of greenpeace, etc) break out in laughter about the concept of homeopathy (dilute, dilute, dilute) - the idiocy simply hadn't occured to them, because they just assumed homeopathy = herbal/natural treatment.
