Response to homeopath's attack on skeptics.

This article, is a response to this article:

http://hpathy.com/homeopathy-papers/africa-the-last-frontier-the-battle-...

I'm also going to try to post this response in their comments, to see what reply I get.

Hey, I've got a great idea to get more homeopathic treatment funded by the WHO, for treatment of AIDS and malaria in Africa.

Prove it works! Do that, and I'm sure you'll get lots of funding.

South Africa has a great reputation with homeopathy does it? If I'm not mistaken, I do believe they have the worst rates of AIDS then any other african nation, even though they are the richest? Directly a result from their AIDS denialist health ministers and head of government? What about Matthias Rath?

These people tried the alternative natural remedy route. Millions of innocent people died when they didn't have to. Their lives ended when they could have lived decades more with their families and friends, or even prevented full blown AIDS developing.

You've heard of a 'doctor' racking up 7000 malaria cures? He's cured malaria 7000 times? Seven thousand? Do you not think that somebody who is walking around TZ, curing literally several thousand people would not garner any attention with the BBC world trust charity which works greatly in Africa? Would he not be the new messiah? Cured more people then Jesus? You not think a lot of doctors around the area would not have noticed, and binned the anti-malarial drugs for homeopathy instead? I say 'doctor' as I'm guessing he doesn't have a MD worth noting.

I can't even imagine what sort of actual doctors would sit their in their hospitals and watch people die in front of them everyday for years, but know that some one in TZ has cured 7000(!) people of malaria and not instantly jump at the chance. Even just to end the continuous cycle of death and misery they see everyday. Even for a few children a day. Even for their own children. Even for one child.

What's more likely?

That the whole thing is a big pharma conspiracy, someone with no medical degree is walking around TZ curing 7000 people of malaria, doctors ignore him, and instead play part in a giant charade they know about. Wasting hours of their day every day 365 days a year, for little or no wages in the middle of Africa in searing heat.

Or, there are doctors, real doctors, trying their damn hardest to save as many lives as possible for little money. When they could move to America, or France, or the UK, and makes hundreds of thousands a year, open up a practice of their own and become millionaires in their lifetime. Easily. Why then do they stay to help? If they know that some bloke walking around is curing people with homeopathy. Surely they'd just pack it in? Or maybe join in by the millions and cure the whole continent? Then move? Or make their African country a strong nation of healthy happy people?

You might say, well it's because big pharma doesn’t make money from homeopathy? That's weird, because a lot of alternative medicines such as homeopathy are actually multi million dollar businesses. How much money do you think a pharmaceutical company would make if they found a cure for malaria, which they could make very cheaply and easily, and sell at a very low price? Pharmaceutical companies spend hundreds of millions every year just on branding alone. Like all businesses they spend a lot of money on their brand name, their brand. To separate their drugs and quality of drugs from every other companies.

All it would take is one pharmaceutical company who's stocks have dropped slightly to want to please the stock holders. One CEO is all it would take who wants to keep his job. One CEO to think what would happen if we made the cure for malaria, and made sure our company name was on the bottle? We'd have better brand recognition then google or mac donalds essentially over night. Africa would become a continent of billions in a few decades, and every one of them would look at our brand as the company that saved millions of lives, and allowed Africa to be rid of one of it's most crippling diseases over night.

There would be T-Shirts, there would be statues made to us. Roads, buildings, towns and cities, all named after our brand. I would become a CEO business legend. We would win the noble prize. We would have saved more lives then any other person on earth for the rest of human history. We would be known for a thousand years to come. They would use our name as slang for an angel like group of people saving millions at a time, creating a new world order of health, new physics and new levels of medical science. People would name their children after us. People would boast how they are a direct descendent of the CEO's secretary. The CEO would become a trillionaire. If big pharma likes money, then this is surely the sensible route to take?

O that's right, you can't prove that it works. In fact, it has been proven to not work more then a placebo so many times that the UK government did an evidence check and laughed the homeopaths out of the room. They had no evidence, they admitted they had no evidence. They admitted they could not prove it worked. Even though one of the ministers on the board had lobbied and worked for alternative medicine companies for years. You had one of your own on the board, but still no proof.

Until you can prove something works, your statements are worthless.

Google whatever you like from the above.

Hilarious that a kook who believes in homeopathy would also believe that searching for something in Google causes it to be moved up in the ordering of results. That's exactly the sort of almost-plausible, doesn't-stand-up-to-even-basic-fact-checking nonsense that they love to peddle.

Also my comment has not been moderated yet it seems.

Have you read anything by Debby Bruck who commented on this womans article? She's an absolute imbecile and her articles are beyond stupid. I just don't understand how these people justify their behaviour.

The moderator must know what I'm trying comment, as I've tried to post the comment twice! They must be reading it and rejecting it every time? Unless someone has just not read it yet.

I'm going to send an email instead I think.

Didi Ananda Ruchira says "Big Pharma is out to milk as much money as they can from these three diseases." Later on she says "This battle will be won ultimately by homeopathy, because drug-based medicine is running out of steam. Those of us working tirelessly on the ground for the benefit of humanity need your support, both morally and financially." Which seems like a call for the money to go to Big Placebo instead.

(I first heard the term "Big Placebo" in Michael Specter's TED talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_specter_the_danger_of_science_denial.html )

Big Placebo is a great term. New favourite there I think.

Hi Darren

I just posted the following on the hpthy site

"Hi. You say: I’ve been told there is a Tanzanian homeopath who has recorded 7000 cures of malaria."

Who is this person? If we could publicise this success, rather than make a seemingly unsubstantiated, hearsay statement wouldn't that rock the big pharma boat? Why not trumpet this success?"

Let's see if there's a repsonse
