A most controversial man

Mavericks. People showing great independence of thought*.

Some of the greatest discoveries in science have been made by mavericks. Nonsensical untruths have been promulgated by those very same mavericks. Mavericks stimulate the imagination - they lend themselves naturally as protagonists in a stimulating narrative, generating public interest. Heroes like Galileo and denialists like Duesberg all share one thing in common: going against the grain.

The Express and the European Foundation on Climate: Wrong in 100 Ways

Even as the circulation of The Express collapses, the newspaper continues to lead the way to oblivion with the sort of conspiracy-driven journalism that wouldn't look out of place in the National Inquirer.

The Chocolate Serum That Isn't

A company called Ikove is advertising on its website an Acai Chocolate Age-Resisting Serum. The magic C word caught my attention.

According to the press release: 'ikove means 'keep alive' in Tupi-Guarani, an indigenous South American language, and the luxurious Ikove Acai Chocolate skincare range does just that!'

Resisting the temptation to apply some of the products to a small dying animal to see if they would indeed keep it alive, I looked at the description of the serum.

Westminster Skeptics: Christmas Drinks

Just a quickie this time. Enjoyed myself very much at the Skeptics Westminster Christmas drinks last night. The place was stuffed full with bloggers, writers, nerds, political activists and campaigners - great company all.

There was a good atheist turnout despite the Biblical weather conditions. Here are a few pics for those of you who couldn't make it.

The rise of science blogging and the effective exploitation by activists, scientists, and science writers, of online communication has been a significant but fairly recent phenomenon.

This meeting, which is an unofficial sequel to the Science OnLine conference in London earlier this year, will focus on the strengths a...nd weaknesses of this phenomenon, both now and in the future.

Bring on the PCC!

Baroness Buscombe, the Chair of the Press Complaints Commission, the organization that so effectively avoids ruling on 'journalists', has suggested that the remit of the PCC could be expanded to include bloggers, with blogs, on the blogosphere. As you can imagine, it's gone down about as well as a Jan Moir lecture on ethics at a Boyzone funeral.

Unity, and other bloggers at my occasional holiday retreat "Liberal Conspiracy", have written an open letter to Baroness Buscombe at the PCC which reads as follows (well, I may be paraphrasing slightly):

Dear Ms. Buscombe
